Comments:  Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard' or Adam's Needle or Evil's Shoestring or Needle Palm or Spoonleaf Yucca or Yucca concava or Yucca flaccida or Yucca smalliana is a stemless evergreen succulent shrub with a clumping growth habit.  It is a native of USA and can be found growing on to beaches and sand dunes from South Carolina to Florida and Mississippi.  In late Spring, Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard' produces 3-4" long stalk of  showy, terminal panacles of fragrant pale yellow, nodding, 2-3" long, bell-shaped blossoms, followed later by elliptic capsule fruits.  Butterflies and  bees are magnetized by the nectar-rich blossoms while birds enjoy feasting on the seeds.  Yucca smalliana has exquisite variegated, smooth basal foliage with golden striped center and green margins;  interesting curly threads appear along the margins.  Adam's Needle is easily propagated from suckers taken in Spring or rooted divisions in Winter.   It thrives best in well-drained, poor sandy mildly acidic, neutral or mildly alkaline soil in a sunny or part shade environment.  Evil's Shoestring is low maintenance.  It tolerates drought conditions and is ideal for xeriscaping.  Yucca flaccida is deer and rabbit resistant.  Offsets appear around mature plant.  Mass plant Needle Palm in the borders or rock garden.  Use them on slopes.  Spoonleaf Yucca makes an architectural statement in the rock garden.  Yucca concava is popularly cultivated by many hobbyists for its spectacular foliage which turns rosy in the Fall and Winter.  It can also be cultivated in a large container.  Yucca smalliana accents well with other foliage plants.  It is a terrific show stopper.

USDA Zones:  4-10
