Comments:  Allium Giganteum 'Globemaster' or Giant Allium or Giant Onion or  Ornamental Onion is a pretty perennial bulb plant with a showy display.  The bulb is edible and has medicinal value.  Consumption of Giant Allium is said to reduce high cholesterol levels and aids the digestive and circulatory systems. The leaves and root have a mild onion flavor and are eaten either raw or cooked while the flowers are used as a garnish in salads.  Ornamental Onion is pollinated by insects and bees and is said to repel moles and the juice is a moth repellant.  Giant Onion is a  good companion plant for white and yellow flowering perennials like roses, Irises, peonies and Weigela but will inhibit growth of legumes.  Plant in a permanent position and give it plenty of space as it does not like competion from other plants.  Allium Giganteum is easily propagated from bulb offsets and look very lovely when grown in masses in the perennial bedding or borders or in containers to accent the patio or deck.  The lovely flowers are superb for floral arrangements as they are long-lasting.  In colder regions, Giant Allium 'Globemaster'  requires mulching.
