Origin:  From the Andes mountains of Chile and Peru

Comments: Amaryllis 'Red Lion' or Hippeastrum is a large flowering bulb plant with gorgeous long lasting flowers. It is popularly sold as a holiday plant in garden centers towards the end of the year.  Amaryllis 'Red Lion' blooms 2-3 months after planting;  the bold bright red blosssoms are a welcoming sight to usher in the festive seasons and brighten up the gloomy garden at this time of the year. This is a carefree, hardy, low-maintenance  specimen plant that is easily propagated from offsets.  Hippeastrum 'Red Lion' looks great grown in a container as a houseplant or grown them in masses in borders or beddings for a striking effect.  Allow leaves to die back after flowering and fertilize regularly.  Reduce watering when leaves turned yellow until they die.  It might reward you with a second bloom in about 4 months' time.  Mulch to protect from frost.  In colder areas, store bulb at room temperatures till next growing season or if left outside, just bury the pot in a semi-shade area afer danger of frost had passed.  Repot plant every few years.  Amaryllis 'Red Lion'  makes an excellent gift and the cut flowers are excellent for floral arrangements.
